SOUTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. (AP) - Special Olympics Rhode Island is holding its annual state summer games this weekend.
The games are expected to draw 1,500 athletes, 2,000 volunteers and 4,000 family members to the University of Rhode Island in South Kingstown. The events kicked off Friday and conclude Sunday with a family cookout and end of the athletic competitions.
Athletes will compete against their peers in bowling, cycling, powerlifting, swimming, track and field and other events.
Richard Rocheleau, games director for the state summer games, says athletes have been training and looking forward to the competition for weeks. He says the three regional games were cancelled due to rain.
An Olympic Village has been set up with yoga, dancing and health screenings.
