It was not a surprise when Kawhi Leonard signed with the Los Angeles Clippers in free agency. The reigning Finals MVP is from Southern California and his rumored interested in returning to that area was well reported for over a year.
But hardcore NBA fans were shocked Wednesday when ESPN reported the details of Leonard’s contract — a three-year, $103 million deal with a player option in Year 3.
That matters because Leonard can become a free agent once again in 2021.
Coincidentally, that is also when his new co-star, forward Paul George, can also become a free agent, as well as Milwaukee Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo.
It was initially reported that Leonard would sign a four-year, $143 million.
