The University of Virginia scored a pair of wins this week and were rewarded with another top-three ranking. The University of Maryland suffered a pair of losses, and the consequences followed accordingly.

The Cavaliers remained No. 3 in this week’s Associated Press men’s basketball poll, while the Terrapins dropped eight spots from 13th to 21st.

Maryland lost to No. 6 Michigan State on the road, 69-55, then suffered a surprise defeat at the hands of Illinois, 78-67, on a neutral court at Madison Square Garden.

Still, the Terrapins (16-5, 7-3 Big Ten) stayed in the nation’s top 25 for the third week in a row.

Virginia took care of two ACC opponents last week, running past Wake Forest 68-45 and Notre Dame 82-55.

The Cavaliers (18-1, 6-1 ACC) received four first-place votes, but stayed behind No. 1 Tennessee and No. 2 Duke. The top six in the poll did not change from a week ago.
