NEWPORT, N.H. (AP) - A group of mothers is collecting gift cards and having meals delivered to the New Hampshire family that lost a toddler found dead in the bitter cold.

The women didn’t know the mother of 2 ½-year-old Sofia Van Schoick, but felt compelled to help a fellow mother and her family. Police said the child wandered outside of her Newport home and died of exposure in subzero temperatures Monday.

One member of the group, Tracy Conroy, tells WMUR-TV the community is tight-knit and when tragedy strikes, everyone is there for each other.

The mothers set up a GoFundMe account to help pay for Sofia’s funeral. They’re also collecting diapers for Sofia’s twin brother.

Katie Meunier said, “I think a lot of it breaks down to because we are all moms. “
