GULFPORT, Miss. (AP) - Prosecutors in Mississippi say a doctor is accused of illegally distributing opioids and laundering money.
News outlets report that Dr. Robert A. Wiemer of Stephensville, Texas was arrested Monday. A federal grand jury indicted the 72-year-old on several offenses, including 51 counts of distributing and dispensing controlled substances outside the scope of professional practice.
Federal authorities claim Wiemer began illegally prescribing painkillers, muscle relaxers and sedatives as early as 2014. The indictment says he laundered the funds derived from his illegal business. Authorities say Wiemer spent more than $270,000 in ill-gotten gains on vehicles, property and debt payments, among other things. The federal government wants to confiscate the property.
