INDIANAPOLIS — The NFL is a “win-now” league, which can often stop teams from starting a rookie quarterback.
But despite missing the playoffs for the last three seasons, Redskins coach Jay Gruden said Thursday he’d have “no problem” handing the keys to a rookie for the upcoming season.
Gruden acknowledged the Redskins need to add someone at the position with Colt McCoy the only healthy quarterback on the roster for next season. Starter Alex Smith is still recovering from a serious leg injury.
Washington has the 15th overall pick in the draft.
“There’s always urgency, for sure,” Gruden said. “When you draft a rookie quarterback — if you draft a rookie quarterback — you expect him to play him or sit a year or whatever, the time of development is you don’t have a lot of time.
“You expect these guys to play. If you’re gonna invest a draft pick into these guys, they should come in and play and be ready to play. You’re drafting them for a reason — not to hold a clipboard.”
