BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) - North Dakota’s Senate has approved a resolution that would give the Legislature input on successful citizen-led initiatives that amend the state constitution.

Senators voted 31-16 on Monday to allow the Legislature to vote on the measure following voters’ approval. The initiative would go back to voters for final approval if it fails to win lawmakers’ endorsement.

Opponents believe the proposed legislation goes against the will of the people.

Republican Sen. David Hogue says the legislation was inspired in part by a string of successful ballot measures funded largely by out-of-state interests.

The resolution now goes to the House for consideration.
