SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. (AP) - A sheriff in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula has received more than 100 cards and many flower bouquets as he recovers from a car crash.

Chippewa County Sheriff Michael Bitnar suffered major injuries when a car crossed the center line on Aug. 10. His vehicle rolled several times.

Undersheriff Greg Postma says the public has responded with cards and flowers. He says the sheriff is sharing the flowers with other patients at War Memorial Hospital in Sault Ste. Marie.

Postma says Bitnar has been “humbled” by the extraordinary response. But Postma says the “community has always been that way.”
