GATE CITY, Va. (AP) - Authorities say sheriff’s deputies shot and wounded a man in an exchange of gunfire at a Virginia home.

Virginia State Police said in a statement that Scott County sheriff’s deputies responded to a 911 call about a violent person at a Gate City home Tuesday night.

Police say deputies obtained an emergency custody order for a 49-year-old man and were met at the door by a man with a handgun. Police say he refused to drop the gun, then stepped outside and fired at deputies. Deputies returned fire and police say the man was struck once.
