MIAMI (AP) - Three Colombian men have pleaded guilty to a human smuggling operation that left two Cuban migrants dead.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office in Miami says 27-year-old Carlos Emilio Ibarguen Palacios and 23-year-old Jhoan Stiven Carreazo Asprilla pleaded guilty this week to a four-count federal indictment, while 30-year-old Fredis Valencia Palacios pleaded guilty to the same charges last month.
Court records show two Cuban men and a Cuban woman had paid the smugglers in 2016 to take them from Colombia to Panama as they made their way to the U.S. Valencia Palacios delivered the Cubans to a boat operated by Ibarguen Palacios and Carreazo Asprilla. During the trip, prosecutors say the Cuban woman was raped and killed, and one of the Cuban men was killed. Another Cuban man was thrown overboard and left for dead but was rescued by a local fisherman a day later.
