WARWICK, R.I. (AP) - The trial of a Rhode Island man authorities say fell asleep on top of his 7-month-old daughter and asphyxiated her has been delayed while the state challenges an evidence ruling.
The second-degree murder trial of 39-year-old Ryan Beeley was scheduled to start this week. It was delayed as the state seeks to a judge’s ruling to bar statements to police made by the baby’s mother.
Beeley’s lawyers say the statements should be excluded because they won’t be able to question the mother, who has been deemed incompetent and is hospitalized.
