A tweet from the Denver Sheriffs Fraternal Order of Police says the inmate was using a plastic milk crate to beat the deputy over the head.

The tweet says the inmate then began to choke the deputy when several other inmates came to the aid of the injured deputy.

The union tweet says “if not for several inmates hitting the attacker our officer might be dead.”

The sheriff department says the incident is under investigation.

The inmate’s name and possible charges have not been released.
