CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) - A police department in West Virginia that promised two years ago to undergo anti-racism training has yet to complete the agreed upon course.
The Charleston Gazette-Mail reported Saturday that a report by coalition Call to Action for Racial Equality says the Charleston Police Department has completed one part of an eight-part course. The course is part of an initiative the department and coalition announced in 2016 to address racial disparities in policing.
Coalition executive director Gabrielle Chapman says the two organizations scheduled the training for spring this year, but the department postponed it. Police Cpl. Errol Randle says the anti-racism training and an emotional intelligence training are tentatively planned for spring.
The report says other parts of the initiative such as de-escalation training and body-camera preparations have been completed.
