ELIZABETH, N.J. (AP) - A former New Jersey police officer was sentenced to 270 days in jail in a crash that killed a motorcyclist almost a year ago.
NJ.com reports that 31-year-old Romulo Meneses-Alvarez of Elizabeth wiped away tears as he told the judge Friday he was filled with regret and shame.
He pleaded guilty earlier to vehicular homicide, evidence-tampering and driving while intoxicated in the October 2017 off-duty crash that killed 29-year-old Jairo Lozano, who was riding a motorcycle.

The victim’s relatives, who sobbed throughout the hearing, told the judge that the defendant took the life of a good man and tampered with evidence to hide his guilt.
Prosecutors said Meneses-Alvarez had to forfeit his police position as part of the plea agreement and will spend three years on probation following his release.
