CINCINNATI (AP) - Police in Cincinnati say someone stole a rifle and a shotgun from a deputy’s unmarked take-home car.

Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office district commander Lt. Tory Smith didn’t learn of the theft until Aug. 21 - and police say the guns could have been stolen as early as July 6. WCPO-TV reports the stolen items include a Colt AR-15-style semi-automatic rifle, a Remington shotgun, a tactical vest, five AR-15 magazines, cases for the guns and a pocket trauma kit.

Officials say Smith has been disciplined for leaving his vehicle unlocked. Lt. David Daughtery says authorities will prioritize getting the weapons back.
