NEWPORT, R.I. (AP) - Police in Newport say the husband and wife team who own a fashion boutique have been charged on multiple counts of issuing fraudulent checks.

Newport police say 38-year-old Erin Ribeiro and 51-year-old Thomas Ribeiro entered no plea to the charges on Oct. 25 and were released on bond. The Newport Daily News reports the landlord for their Rib & Rhine fashion shop told police that the Ribeiros sent him five bad checks totaling $11,167 for rent and past-due rent.

Police say the landlord provided documentation stating the checks had insufficient funds. The couple has closed the store down.
