JACKSON, Miss. (AP) - Four candidates in southwestern Mississippi are competing for an open seat in the state House of Representatives.

The winner will serve the final year of a four-year term started by Democratic Rep. America “Chuck” Middleton. He was elected in 1995 and resigned at the end of August.

The special election is Tuesday in District 85 in parts of Claiborne, Franklin, Jefferson and Warren counties.

The candidates are JoAnn Collins-Smith of Port Gibson Tyler K. Doss of Port Gibson, Jeffery Harness of Fayette and Maurice Hudson of Fayette.

If nobody wins a majority, the top two will compete in a Nov. 27 runoff.
