SOUTH SALT LAKE, Utah (AP) - A man who walked away from a federal halfway house while serving a prison sentence for bank robbery is accused of robbing a Salt Lake City-area bank soon after he absconded.

South Salt Lake police identified the suspect in the armed robbery Friday of a bank branch as a 57-year-old Jerry Robert Petty.

Police said Petty reportedly walked away from a halfway house on Thursday, while the federal Bureau of Prisons website said Petty escaped Friday.

Federal court records say Petty was sentenced in 2011 in federal court in Utah to just 10.5 years in prison after he pleaded guilty to bank robbery.

Nobody was harmed in the robbery Friday but police said Petty is considered armed and dangerous and that anyone with information on his whereabouts should call police.
