FORT MYERS, Fla. (AP) - A Florida man has been sentenced to life in prison for fatally shooting his girlfriend.

The State Attorney’s Office says 23-year-old Benjamin Monroe Allen was sentenced Friday after a Lee County jury found him guilty of second-degree murder.

Authorities say the victim was staying at a friend’s Fort Myers home in June 2016 because Allen was angry with her. Prosecutors say Allen went to the home, dragged the victim outside and shot her. He fled the area but was arrested in Miami several days later.

Police say DNA collected from a hat at the murder scene was a match to Allen, and multiple witnesses testified about hearing Allen threaten to kill the woman.
