WEST MONROE, La. (AP) - A Louisiana animal shelter’s cupboards were almost as bare as Old Mother Hubbard’s, but a request on its Facebook page brought in thousands of pounds of cat and dog food.
“I used to foster dogs — my fiancé and I have four big dogs together — and I just don’t want these animals to go hungry for Thanksgiving,” one donor, Annsley Walden, told KNOE-TV .
News agencies report that the donations began pouring in soon after Ouachita Parish Animal Shelter posted an emergency request on its Facebook page Tuesday morning. People came in with cars and pickup trucks loaded with bags of dog and cat food.

“You want to talk about a parish that shows up? It’s like happy Thanksgiving to our shelter,” Dustin “Duck” Campbell, the shelter’s social media manager, told The News-Star .
Campbell told KNOE he put out the plea after filling the 55-gallon drum where food for day-to-day feeding is kept and realizing that only one 20-pound bag remained.
The drum holds enough dog food for two or three days, he told the News-Star.
One Facebook message from the shelter Tuesday said such calls usually result in five to 10 bags being brought in. In addition to food, the shelter also received money from the community, other parishes, states and rescues, the message said.
On Wednesday, Campbell posted another thank-you. “We are to the Max with room. Thank you everyone sooooo much!!” he wrote.
