EVERETT, Wash. (AP) - Prosecutors say they will not seek the death penalty in a decades-old double killing cold case in Washington.
The Everett Herald reports the confirmation Monday by Snohomish County prosecutors comes one month after the state Supreme Court ruled that the state’s death penalty law is unconstitutional.
Until the October decision, prosecutors had been considering whether to seek the death penalty in the case against truck driver William Earl Talbott II who is charged with the aggravated murders of Jay Cook and Tanya Van Cuylenborg.
The Canadian couple was on an errand to the Puget Sound area to pick up furnace parts for Cook’s father when the two were abducted and killed more than 30 years ago.
The plan is for trial to begin in early April with pretrial motions set for March 29.
