ASHBURN, Va. — Washington Redskins left tackle Trent Williams dislocated his thumb Sunday against the New York Giants, and said afterward — with a cast around his hand — he was unsure how long, or if, the injury would keep him out.

A few days later, the Redskins still are waiting to see if Williams will be able to play through the pain.

Williams did not practice Wednesday and coach Jay Gruden said he didn’t “have a feel” if the Pro Bowler would be available for Sunday’s game against the Atlanta Falcons.

“It’s really sore right now but hopefully the swelling calms down a little bit and get him in something he can play in and we’ll see how it goes,” coach Jay Gruden said.

If Williams is unavailable, Ty Nsekhe would fill in at left tackle. Nsekhe played 23 snaps in Williams’ place against the Giants.

Nsekhe is a quality backup and drew praise from quarterback Alex Smith.

“I think the biggest compliment could be that nothing changes, we don’t skip a beat,” Smith said. “Play calling-wise, run, pass, you name it, nothing really skips a beat and that is very, very rare in this league. I think when in the middle of the game, your All-Pro left tackle goes out, it’s a rarity to have a guy like Ty to step in and do what he does.”
