MCKEE, Ky. (AP) - A former county treasurer in Kentucky is accused of writing $161,000 worth of checks to herself and trying to cover up the crime.
News outlets report that 37-year-old Beth N. Sallee was indicted by a grand jury Thursday of 10 charges of theft, wire fraud and aggravated identity theft. The indictment alleges that the former Jackson County treasurer wrote unauthorized checks to herself and forged the names of other county employees on them between 2012 and 2016.
It says she tried to cover up the crimes by removing parts of county financial documents and covering the page numbers with white out. Audits of county finances say Sallee’s forged checks took money from areas including a federally-funded program meant to help counties prepare for emergencies.
