WEST OLIVE, Mich. (AP) - A prosecutor has cleared a western Michigan police officer in the fatal shooting of a man who was holding his estranged wife at gunpoint after killing a man he believed was having an affair with her.
The Ottawa County prosecutor announced Tuesday that a Holland police officer was justified in using deadly force when he fired a single shot to the head that killed 27-year-old Matthew Hartman on Aug. 22 outside his mobile home in the West Olive area. Prosecutor Ronald Frantz wrote that negotiations with Hartman had failed and immediate action was necessary to prevent another homicide.
Authorities say Hartman killed 28-year-old Jordan Carey that morning at Carey’s Muskegon home after driving his wife there, then returned her at gunpoint to their home.
