CONCORD, N.H. (AP) - A portrait of the first woman to serve on New Hampshire’s Executive Council is a step closer to being displayed at the Statehouse.
Dudley Dudley, who is now 81, served four terms on the council starting in 1977. Known as a liberal activist, the Durham Democrat also served as a state representative and was a leader in the fight to stop Greek shipping magnate Aristotle Onassis from building an oil refinery off the New Hampshire coast in the 1970s.
Former Gov. Maggie Hassan, a Democrat, approved a portrait of Dudley, and it was unveiled in 2016. But the next step - approval by the Executive Council - didn’t happen until Wednesday. The Concord Monitor reports that Democrats accused Republican Gov. Chris Sununu of delaying the process, but the governor denies that.
