Former Gov. Ed Rendell said Tuesday that the special election in Pennsylvania is an important bellwether for Republicans looking at the fall midterms.

“If Conor Lamb comes within 5 points, it’s a big bellwether saying that Republicans are in for real trouble in November,” Mr. Rendell, Pennsylvania Democrat, said on Fox News.

Mr. Lamb is running as the Democrat against Republican Rick Saccone in a special election for former Rep. Tim Murphy’s seat. The 18 Congressional District near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania is rural with more Democratic union voters than Republicans, but was recently represented by a Republican. Mr. Murphy resigned last year after several reports said he asked his mistress to have an abortion when he thought she was pregnant.

Former Vice President Joe Biden is campaigning for Mr. Lamb today. President Trump will visit over the weekend to campaign for Mr. Saccone.

The race is set for March 13 and is the first general election race of the year.
