ALAMOGORDO, N.M. (AP) - The federal government has granted the city of Alamogordo a static display of an F-4 aircraft.
The Alamogordo Daily News reports Airport Manager Jim Talbert announced the news to the City Commission earlier this month.
City officials sent the General Services Administration a request for a display in early February.
The F-4 Phantom II flew the Alamogordo skies for 50 years.
The jet was the primary bomber aircraft in the U.S. Air Force between the 1960s and 1970s.
The Holloman Air Force had 96 F-4s in four squadrons.
After it was retired from the U.S. Air Force, the German air force brought their F-4 training to Holloman which continued until 2014.
The city plans to place the display inside the Alamogordo Airborne Monument and paint it with Vietnam-era colors.
