Friday afternoon’s slate of NCAA Tournament games concluded with an overtime thriller as No. 7 Nevada stunned No. 10 Texas 87-83 in overtime.
Texas led by as many as 14 points in the second half but could not stave off a Nevada comeback in the final minutes.
Five players scored in double digits for the Wolfpack, led by Kendall Stephens with 22 points and Caleb Martin with 18 points and 10 rebounds. Martin’s brother Cody Martin scored 15 points and Jordan Caroline added 14 points and eight boards.
Kerwin Roach II led Texas with 26 points, Matt Coleman had 25 and star freshman Mohamed Bamba added 13 points and 14 rebounds.
With a 68-67 Texas lead and three seconds remaining in regulation, Bamba fouled Caroline on a layup attempt (and fouled out of the game on the play). But Caroline only made one of his two foul shots, ultimately setting up overtime.
With the score 73-73, Roach II drew a foul while draining a 3-pointer for the Longhorns, converting it into a 4-point play. But Nevada scored the next eight points on a Caroline dunk and two Caleb Martin 3-pointers, and the Wolfpack never looked back.
Nevada went 6-for-6 from the floor in overtime. The team faces No. 2 Cincinnati on Sunday in the second round.
