Atlanta United FC dealt D.C. United a 3-1 loss Sunday in front of an MLS-record 72,035 fans at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta.
Josef Martinez chipped in the first goal for Atlanta in the 24th minute, on an assist by Hector Villalba. There would not be another goal until a flurry of them late in the second half.
Miguel Almirón scored in the 73rd minute on a straight shot 18 yards out, with Julian Gressel credited with the assist. Almirón then fed a pass to Villalba, who headed in the third goal just two minutes later.
Darren Mattocks provided D.C.’s only goal in the 86th minute when former Atlanta player Yamil Asad grazed a pass off a defender’s boot and the ball slipped past Mattocks’ man in the box.
