KUNA, Idaho (AP) - Authorities say hundreds of young gulls learning to fly have been hit and killed by vehicles after landing on a road in southwestern Idaho near Kuna.
Idaho Fish and Game biologist Casey Pozzanghera tells KBOI-TV in a story on Friday that gulls are nesting nearby at an enclosed evaporation pond owned by a meat packing plant.
He says that the young gulls leave the nest but aren’t entirely comfortable flying yet and get hit on the road by vehicles.
The gulls are protected under Migratory Bird Treaty Act.
Officials with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service are looking at ways to avoid bird deaths in the area but say it’s a challenging situation.
