PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Rhode Island environmental officials are conducting extra patrols to crack down on impaired boating.
The Department of Environmental Management says the stepped up enforcement efforts will continue through Sunday.
The department says it’s looking for boaters under the influence of alcohol or drugs in an effort to reduce the number of boating accidents, deter alcohol and drug use and raise awareness.
It’s a joint program by the department’s environmental police, the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators, U.S. Coast Guard and other partner agencies.
During a similar campaign last year, DEM boarded 111 boats, issued 47 warnings and citations, arrested three people, responded to accidents and conducted search and rescue missions.
