TRENTON, N.J. (AP) - A suspended senior corrections officer accused of conspiring with an inmate to smuggle in drugs and tobacco at a state prison in New Jersey has been indicted on official misconduct charges.

Steven Saunders also faces bribery and conspiracy counts in the indictment handed up Wednesday by a state grand jury. It was made public Friday.

Authorities say the 50-year-old Camden man conspired with the inmate and the inmate’s girlfriend to smuggle in marijuana, tobacco and oxycodone to Southern State Correctional Facility in Maurice River. They say he received cash bribes in return.

The scheme allegedly started in March 2016 and ended when Saunders was arrested in November 2017. He was suspended after his arrest.

It wasn’t known Friday if Saunders has retained an attorney.
