Voters are closely divided over whether to trust the media or President Trump, according to a Morning Consult/Politico poll released Thursday.

In general, voters are nearly split when asked if they trust the White House or the media to tell the truth. Thirty-six percent believe the national media more and 33 percent stand by Mr. Trump’s word. The divide falls starkly on party lines, with Democrats overwhelmingly trusting and Republicans distrusting the news.

Overall, trust in the media fell slightly when compared to the same poll from May 2017. Trust eroded by 2 percentage points for voters in general and 3 percentage points for both Democrats and independents.

However, Mr. Trump’s trust also fell by 2 percentage points for both of those parties, with respondents preferring not to choose either option.

Thursday’s poll was conducted from June 22-24 by interviewing over 1,900 registered voters online. The entire 106 question survey has a margin of error of plus or minus 2 percentage points.
