PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - A contentious speed camera program in Providence has brought in $1.8 million in fines, but some of that money could be refunded as part of a settlement of a lawsuit sparked by program.
WPRI-TV reports that the city issued nearly 37,000 tickets in the first five months of using the cameras. Drivers filed a federal class-action lawsuit against the city, alleging the program was in violation of a state law requiring warning signs. As part of a settlement, the city agreed to refund $20 of the $95 fine to drivers ticketed before April 15.
Municipal Court administrator Patrick Butler says the program is helping to reduce speeding near schools. He says the number of tickets issued by the cameras has dropped substantially since they were first installed.
