Man is dead after being shot by a Mesa police officer

MESA, Ariz. (AP) - Mesa police say a man who may have been armed with a BB gun is dead after being shot by an officer.

They identified the man as 53-year-old Michael Fletcher.

Police say officers responded to a 911 hang-up call from a residential area about 5 p.m. Saturday and encountered a man and a woman.

They escorted the woman away from the home, but say Fletcher yelled at officers and refused to follow directions as he walked back into the house.

Fletcher came outside with what police say appeared to be a handgun.

Police ordered him to drop the weapon, but he reportedly raised it and one of the officers opened fire.

Fletcher then walked back inside the home, resulting in a barricade situation.

SWAT officers later found him dead inside.
