MILWAUKEE (AP) - A man who says he was just driving during the fatal shooting of a 9-year-old Milwaukee girl has been sentenced to 35 years in prison.

Damonta Jennings was one of three men charged in the May 2016 death of Za’Layia Jenkins. She was inside a relative’s home watching TV when she was hit by a bullet fired from outside.

The 21-year-old Jennings pleaded guilty to first-degree reckless homicide, as a party to the crime, last month. The cases of his co-defendants, Otha Jose Brown Jr. and Tony Powell Jr., are ongoing.

Prosecutors say the men fired at the home during a gunfight after an apparent drug sale.

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports that Circuit Judge Mark Sanders said he didn’t believe Jennings didn’t fire a gun. He says Za’Layia’s blood is on Jennings’ hands.
