STATESVILLE, N.C. (AP) - A North Carolina Senate candidate this fall will serve in the General Assembly at least through the end of the year after local Republican activists picked her to fill a vacancy.
Republicans from Iredell, Lincoln and Gaston counties met in Statesville this week and chose Vickie Sawyer of Mooresville to complete the two-year term of former Sen. David Curtis, who resigned last month. Gov. Roy Cooper is obligated by law to appoint Sawyer to Curtis’ 44th Senate District seat.
Because of redistricting, Sawyer is running in November for the redrawn 34th District nearby against Democrat Beniah McMiller. Curtis lost in the GOP primary last month in the redrawn 44th District to Ted Alexander.
The Statesville Record & Landmark reported no other nominees for the vacancy came forward at the meeting.
