COOPERSTOWN, N.Y. (AP) - Doubleday Field in Cooperstown is getting state money for a makeover.
The Village of Cooperstown has been awarded a state grant of up to $3 million to modernize and preserve the 98-year-old baseball field down the street from the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum. Gov. Andrew Cuomo made the announcement Thursday, days before the hall’s annual induction weekend.
The 10,000-seat venue hosts more than 300 games a year. But officials say the stadium’s lack of amenities prevents Doubleday from hosting collegiate and national tournaments.
The $5.8 million rehabilitation project will include replacing the third base bleachers and repairs to the field and the grandstand.
Work is expected to be done by summer 2020.
