MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - Tennessee authorities say they’re investigating after police exchanged fire during a traffic stop with a man who later died.

A statement from the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation says two Memphis police officers stopped a vehicle Wednesday night on a traffic violation and the driver, 29-year-old DMario Perkins, made remarks about killing himself and fired a handgun. The statement says officers also fired their weapons and Perkins suffered at least one gunshot wound. He was taken to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Authorities say an autopsy is planned Thursday.
