The Maryland Terrapins and Navy Midshipmen have an athletic rivalry that most recently came to a head in a game in the NCAA women’s lacrosse tournament. Now they will meet each other on the hardwood again.
Maryland will be Navy’s opponent in the 2018 Veterans Classic in Annapolis, Md., the Naval Academy announced in a press release. Providence and Wichita State will be the other visitors in the fifth edition of the event.
The Friars and Shockers will play the first game of the doubleheader on Friday, Nov. 9 at 6 p.m. at Alumni Hall, before the Mids and Terrapins face off at 8:30.
Maryland has not played Navy in men’s basketball since the 1985 NCAA Tournament, when Len Bias led the Terrapins and David Robinson anchored the Mids. Maryland narrowly won that second-round game in Dayton, Ohio, 64-59.
The early-season showcase honors Veterans Day at the site of the U.S. Naval Academy. Last year, Navy toppled Power Five opponent Pittsburgh 71-62 while Alabama, a ranked team starring Collin Sexton at the time, beat Memphis 82-70.
Maryland is the third Big Ten team to play in the Veterans Classic after Ohio State in 2016 and Michigan State in 2014.
