BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - Louisiana bicyclists held a silent memorial ride for a councilman killed in a crash while riding along a highway.

Louisiana State Police say 61-year-old East Baton Rouge Councilman Anthony “Buddy” Amoroso IV was killed and a 71-year-old friend was injured when an SUV hit them from behind Saturday morning on Louisiana Highway 66. Police say the 21-year-old driver was arrested.

The Advocate reports that more than 75 bicyclists and 25 pedestrians gathered Sunday evening for the memorial.

Amoroso’s wife, Denise Amoroso, told the group that her husband’s passion was bike safety. She told them to be careful because many drivers don’t care about bicyclists.

WBRZ-TV reports that Amoroso’s son, Joey Amoroso, said he’s devastated by his father’s death but it’s good to see how many people loved him.
