PHOENIX (AP) - Phoenix has agreed to a $10 million settlement with the family of a 3-year-old girl who was run over by a police cruiser as she walked across the street after buying ice cream.

The Arizona Republic reports that the city will pay $7.2 million to the family of Vanessa Andrade. The remainder will be paid by the city insurance policy.

The family’s lawyers filed a lawsuit in 2017, alleging the officer was negligent. The case had been slated for a trial before the settlement agreement was reached.

City officials declined to comment on the agreement.

During an investigation, Phoenix police assigned the officer to a non-driving position. That internal investigation found no policy violations, and the officer was exonerated.

The family says Vanessa has undergone numerous surgeries since the August 2016 accident.
