BENTONVILLE, Ark. (AP) - An Arkansas nonprofit has recognized a northwest county’s work on a historic bridge as an example of excellence in preservation through restoration.

The Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette reports that the War Eagle Bridge was closed for repairs from May through September after state inspectors found critical deficiencies during a 2013 inspection.

Benton County Comptroller Brenda Guenther says the county budgeted $1.4 million for the work. The county was also awarded a $500,000 grant from the Transportation Alternatives Program, a federal-aid program to construct sidewalks and trails for non-motorized modes of transportation.
