WASHINGTON, Pa. (AP) - The shooting death by a state trooper of a man police said was armed with a knife has been ruled justified following a coroner’s inquest.

Deputy Coroner Steven Toprani made the decision Monday after several hours of testimony about the October death of 34-year-old Anthony Gallo.

In a recorded interview, a trooper said Gallo retreated into a neighbor’s trailer in Canton Township, then turned and took a step toward him, so he fired four or five times. He said the man was three feet or less away from him when he fired.

Gallo’s family said he had been acting strangely since a May accident and they’d hoped police would help get him a mental health commitment.

District Attorney Eugene Vittone said he doesn’t expect to bring any charges.
