CLOVIS, N.M. (AP) - Documents released by county officials indicate a Clovis police officer failed to properly search the man who pulled a gun from his clothing, leading to a four-hour standoff inside a jail.

The Eastern New Mexico News reports Curry County officials on Wednesday made public emails and other documents that indicate Officer Sanford Wagner claimed fault for the standoff inside the county jail earlier this month.

Authorities say 28-year-old Wesley Flores was in possession of a handgun and shot himself in the jaw. He was taken to a hospital.

Jail administrator Mark Gallegos says in a report to the county manager that Wagner did not properly pat search Flores before he was taken inside the jail.

The police department has declined to comment. The newspaper’s efforts to contact Wagner were unsuccessful.
