White House spokesman Raj Shah said Tuesday that the budget not only addresses several of President Trump’s campaign promises, but it also has a major deficit reduction.
“When you look at this president’s budget, it outlines our priorities. It rebuilds the military — gives the funding that this president has requested, that Secretary [James] Mattis and the generals have requested — to ensure our national security. It funds priorities like helping our veterans, [and] the opioid crisis. It makes a down payment on our infrastructure plan to rebuilds roads, bridges and airports,” Mr. Shah, principal deputy press secretary, said on Fox News.
Mr. Shah added that the budget also has a major deficit reduction — totaling $3 trillion — which he said has not been as widely reported.
Mr. Trump released his budget request on Monday to mixed reviews. Although it includes funding for bipartisan causes, like the opioid problem, some have criticized the plan, arguing it actually adds to the deficit. The $4.4 trillion budget adds $7 trillion to the deficit, according to The New York Times. The proposal now heads to Congress for lawmakers to review.
