CASTLETON, Vt. (AP) - Vermont fire officials say an early morning house fire killed one woman and severely injured another.

Castleton police say 55-year-old Mary Meier was killed in the Saturday fire at the home she shared with her mother, 76-year-old Elinor Zimmerman. The Rutland Herald reports Zimmerman suffered severe burns in the fire and was taken to a Burlington hospital for treatment.

Police Chief Peter Mantello says state fire investigation officials were at the scene Saturday, but the cause is still unknown.

Mantello says a neighbor called in the fire shortly before 2 a.m. Saturday, and that Meier had not gotten out of the home by the time responders arrived.

A hospital spokesman says Zimmerman was listed in critical condition Saturday.
