Hours after he won the Heisman Trophy, Kyler Murray became the latest athlete implicated in one of 2018’s biggest trends: having to apologize for years-old tweets with hurtful messages or word choices.
Murray often used the word “queer” as an insult on social media while he was 14 and 15 years old, something that resurfaced Saturday night after the Oklahoma quarterback won the Heisman.
Murray deleted the tweets and wrote this apology Sunday morning:
I apologize for the tweets that have come to light tonight from when I was 14 and 15. I used a poor choice of word that doesn’t reflect who I am or what I believe. I did not intend to single out any individual or group.

Washington Nationals shortstop Trea Turner, Milwaukee Brewers pitcher Josh Hader and Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen faced similar situations this year, for old tweets with varying levels of offensiveness.
