READING, Pa. (AP) - Prosecutors are no longer seeking execution of a man convicted in the shooting death of a murder witness in a fast-food drive-thru in eastern Pennsylvania more than a decade ago but acquitted of involvement in the original slaying.

Jurors in Berks County acquitted 35-year-old Norman Vega Jr. of involvement in the October 2004 home invasion slaying of 38-year-old Miguel Colon. But after almost two days of deliberations they convicted him of first-degree murder, retaliation against a witness and reckless endangerment in the killing of 20-year-old Jason Stief 11 days later.

Jurors were to hear testimony Wednesday on whether Vega should be executed, but Berks County prosecutors dropped their bid for capital punishment. A judge is to formally sentence Vega in late September to life in prison without possibility of parole.
