President Trump declared Friday that he “already MADE America Great Again” as he mocked New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo for his “really dumb statement.”

Mr. Trump said Mr. Cuomo “choked” when he said America was never great. The president said it could “be a career threatening statement.”

Mr. Cuomo is running for re-election in New York and faces challenger Cynthia Nixon, an actress and activist, for the governor’s seat. In late July, Mr. Cuomo was up by an average of 33 points, according to Real Clear Politics polls.

During a bill-signing event Wednesday, Mr. Cuomo criticized Mr. Trump’s “MAGA” slogan while commenting on gender equality.

“We’re not going to make America great — it was never that great,” Mr. Cuomo said. “We will reach great greatness when every American is fully engaged.”

In response to the wave of backlash, Mr. Cuomo’s press secretary Dani Lever said the governor’s comments were in opposition to the president, not the country.

“When the president speaks about making America great again — going back in time — he ignores the pain so many endured and that we suffered from slavery, discrimination, segregation, sexism and marginalized women’s contributions,” Ms. Lever said. “The governor believes that when everyone is fully included and everyone is contributing to their maximum potential, that is when America will achieve maximum greatness.”
